Denver International Airport (DEN) is the biggest airport in Colorado and the 3rd busiest in the United States. In 2024, DEN served a record 82,358,744 passengers, a 5.8% increase over 2023. The airport covers 33,531 acres (52.4 square miles), making it the largest airport by land area in North America and the second-largest in the world. DEN operates 140+ gates across three concourses and offers flights to over 200 destinations worldwide with 500+ daily departures.
United Airlines is the largest carrier at DEN with 47.3% market share (38.9 million passengers in 2024), followed by Southwest Airlines with 31.0% (25.6 million passengers), and Frontier Airlines with 10.1% (8.3 million passengers). The airport is also a major international gateway with 31 non-stop international destinations across 17 countries.
Colorado has a total of 447 aviation facilities including 73 public airports, 192 private airports, 178 heliports, 1 balloonport, 1 gliderport, 1 seaplane base, and 1 ultralight facility. Of these, 12 airports offer commercial passenger service.
The 12 commercial airports are: Denver International (DEN), Colorado Springs (COS), Aspen (ASE), Eagle County/Vail (EGE), Montrose (MTJ), Durango (DRO), Grand Junction (GJT), Gunnison-Crested Butte (GUC), Yampa Valley/Hayden (HDN), Telluride (TEX), Cortez (CEZ), Alamosa (ALS), and Pueblo Memorial (PUB). Denver International is the only international airport in Colorado with regularly scheduled international flights, though Colorado Springs will begin international service to Cancún in June 2025.
Vail/Beaver Creek: Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE) is 37 miles from Vail (closest option). Denver International (DEN) is 120 miles but offers more flight options and lower fares.
Aspen/Snowmass: Aspen-Pitkin County Airport (ASE) is right in town (3 miles), but aircraft are restricted to regional jets due to the challenging one-way runway and high elevation (7,815 feet). Flights can be expensive and weather-dependent.
Telluride: Telluride Regional Airport (TEX) is just 10 minutes from downtown but is the highest commercial airport in the US (9,070 feet) with very limited service (Denver only). Montrose Regional Airport (MTJ) is 1 hour away with service from 10 major hubs during winter and is the preferred option for most travelers.
Steamboat Springs: Yampa Valley Regional Airport (HDN) in Hayden is 25 miles west of Steamboat with winter service from 6 major airlines including mainline jets. Year-round service to Denver and Dallas is available via United and Southwest.
Crested Butte: Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport (GUC) is about 30 miles from the resort with service from United, American, and Delta to Denver, Dallas, and Houston. The airport sits at 7,680 feet elevation.
High Elevation & Density Altitude: Colorado mountain airports operate at extreme elevations. Telluride (9,070 ft) is the highest commercial airport in North America, while Aspen sits at 7,815 feet. On warm summer days, density altitude can exceed 12,000 feet at Telluride and 11,000 feet at Aspen. This reduces aircraft performance by 20-25% compared to sea-level airports, restricting payload and requiring longer takeoff distances. A "4-passenger airplane becomes a 2-passenger airplane" in summer conditions.
Weather Challenges: Rocky Mountain weather changes rapidly—sunny mornings can turn to rainstorms by midday and snow by afternoon. Strong winds, turbulence, wind shear, updrafts, downdrafts, and mountain waves are common. Telluride experiences a 20% winter flight cancellation rate due to weather. Aspen achieved a rare 100% completion rate in October 2024, but summer 2024 saw more cancellations due to high winds and new FAA wind reporting requirements.
Terrain Restrictions: Aspen has a "one-way in, one-way out" runway approach surrounded by mountains, making it one of the most challenging airports in America. Aircraft are limited to 95-foot wingspans and 100,000-pound weights. Only SkyWest Airlines crews are certified to fly there using CRJ700 and Embraer 175 aircraft. Telluride's runway sits on a mountain plateau with cliffs dropping 1,000+ feet at both ends into the San Miguel River Valley, surrounded by 14,000-foot peaks.
Limited Service & Higher Costs: Mountain airports have fewer flights, smaller aircraft, and higher fares compared to Denver International. Seasonal service dominates (December-April for ski season), with many routes suspended in summer. Weather delays are more frequent, and alternate airport plans are essential when flying to these destinations.
Yes, Denver International Airport is Colorado's primary international gateway with 31 non-stop international destinations across 17 countries. In 2024, DEN served 4.6 million international passengers, a 15% increase over 2023 and 46.2% higher than pre-pandemic 2019 levels. All 12 months of 2024 set new records for international passenger traffic.
Mexico & Caribbean: DEN offers 96 weekly departures to 8 Mexican destinations including Cancún (599,000 passengers in 2024—the top international destination), Cozumel, Guadalajara, Los Cabos, Mexico City, Monterrey, Puerto Vallarta, and Chihuahua.
Europe: 77 weekly departures serve European destinations with 7 airlines: United (London, Frankfurt, Munich, Rome), Aer Lingus, Air France, British Airways, Icelandair, Lufthansa (first-ever A380 service to Denver), and Turkish Airlines. London Heathrow was the 2nd busiest international destination (424,222 passengers), followed by Vancouver (417,285), Frankfurt (339,586), and Munich (299,559).
Canada: Service to Vancouver, Regina, and Winnipeg (new 2025). 2025 Additions: Istanbul, expanded Rome service, San Jose (Costa Rica), Los Cabos, Monterrey, Regina, and Winnipeg. Saturday, March 30, 2024 was the busiest day ever through DEN's Federal Inspection Service facility with over 7,400 arriving international passengers.
Five Colorado airports offer TSA PreCheck expedited security screening:
Denver International (DEN): PreCheck available at East Security, West Security, and A Bridge checkpoints (all Level 6). Hours: 4:00 AM - 8:45 PM daily. Average wait time is 2 minutes for PreCheck members vs. 15-20 minutes for standard security (can exceed 30 minutes during peak). CLEAR is also available at both main checkpoints. DEN offers a free "DEN RESERVE" system where passengers can book specific security time slots 14 days in advance (5 AM-5 PM daily) at West Security 2.
Colorado Springs (COS): PreCheck at main checkpoint with average waits under 5 minutes. Checkpoint hours vary by day: Mon/Sat 4 AM-6 PM, Tue/Wed 4 AM-5 PM, Thu/Sun 4 AM-8 PM, Fri 4 AM-7 PM. Arrive 90 minutes before departure.
Aspen (ASE): PreCheck at Checkpoint 1 with seasonal hours. Grand Junction (GJT): PreCheck at GJTZ Checkpoint. Montrose (MTJ): PreCheck at MTJZ Checkpoint.
No PreCheck: Durango (DRO), Eagle County (EGE), Gunnison (GUC), Yampa Valley/Hayden (HDN), Telluride (TEX), and Pueblo (PUB) do not offer TSA PreCheck. Nationwide, 99% of TSA PreCheck passengers wait less than 10 minutes in security lines.

Telluride Express: Premier ground transportation service to all area airports including Telluride (TEX), Montrose (MTJ), Grand Junction (GJT), Durango (DRO), Cortez (CEZ), and Gunnison (GUC). Door-to-door service with shared-ride and private accommodations available.
Bustang: Colorado's public bus system provides affordable transportation throughout the state, including connections from Denver to mountain communities. Budget-friendly option but with less flexibility than private shuttles.
Car Rentals at DEN: 10+ major rental car companies with free shuttle service from terminal Level 5, Island 4 (doors 505-513 East, 504-512 West). Shuttles run approximately every 10 minutes. Driving time to major resorts: Breckenridge (90 min), Vail (120 min), Aspen (3.5-4 hours), Steamboat Springs (3 hours).
Rideshare (Uber/Lyft): Available from terminal Level 5, Island 5 (exit doors 506-510 West or 507-511 East). Costs vary significantly based on distance and demand, especially during peak ski weekends.
United Airlines (47.3% market share): DEN is United's largest U.S. hub with 90 gates and 38.9 million passengers in 2024. United and regional partners operate 500+ daily departures to nearly 200 airports worldwide. Service expanded by over 60% since 2010. Operates mainline and United Express flights with extensive domestic and international networks including major European routes (London, Frankfurt, Munich, Rome).
Southwest Airlines (31.0% market share): 25.6 million passengers in 2024. DEN is Southwest's most popular destination with flights to nearly 100 different destinations and 300+ daily departures. Recently leased 16 new gates in Concourse C, bringing total gate count to 40—the largest at any single Southwest airport nationwide.
Frontier Airlines (10.1% market share): Headquartered in Denver with 8.3 million passengers in 2024. Frontier uses DEN as its largest base of operations with 100+ aircraft based at the airport. Departures from Denver increased over 30% since 2019, reaching approximately 18% of passenger traffic. Frontier gained 4 additional gates when Concourse A-East wing expansion opened in summer 2024.
International Carriers: Air France, Aer Lingus, British Airways, Icelandair, Lufthansa (including first-ever Airbus A380 service to Denver), Turkish Airlines, and others serve European destinations. Aeromexico and Volaris serve Mexico.
Other Major Carriers: American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, Alaska Airlines, Spirit Airlines, and various regional carriers also operate at DEN with service to destinations across North America and beyond.
Colorado Springs Airport (COS) is an excellent alternative to Denver International for travelers in the Colorado Springs area or southern Colorado. In 2024, COS served a record 1,239,094 passengers with an average load factor of 81.4%, representing 5% growth over 2023.
Advantages: Much shorter security wait times (under 5 minutes with TSA PreCheck), less crowded terminal, easier parking access, and typically lower stress than navigating DEN's massive facility. COS is located just 10 miles southeast of downtown Colorado Springs, making it convenient for Pikes Peak region travelers. The airport added significant capacity in 2024 and offers competitive fares on many routes.
Airlines & Destinations: Southwest Airlines (Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Long Beach, Phoenix, San Diego, San Antonio), United Airlines (Denver, Houston, Chicago), American Airlines (Dallas, Phoenix), Delta Air Lines (Atlanta), and Sun Country (Minneapolis seasonal). Starting June 7, 2025, Southwest will offer COS's first-ever international route—nonstop service to Cancún on select Saturdays (November through April).
Limitations: Fewer flight options and destinations compared to DEN. No year-round international service until 2025 Cancún route begins. Connecting flights often required for cities not served directly. Checkpoint hours vary by day (as early as 4 AM, closing between 5-8 PM depending on flight schedule).
Best For: Colorado Springs residents, travelers to southern Colorado (Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods, USAFA), those seeking a less hectic airport experience, and visitors to ski areas accessible from the south (driving to Monarch Mountain, Wolf Creek). Less ideal for northern Colorado destinations where DEN is geographically closer.
