Additionally, there are over 150 private-use landing areas, 135 heliports, 17 seaplane bases, and one balloonport. The state's 39 public airports generate an estimated $24.7 billion in total economic output and support 199,237 jobs across Massachusetts.
Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) is by far the busiest airport in Massachusetts. In 2024, Logan handled a record 43.5 million passengers, making it the 15th busiest airport in the United States and the 53rd busiest globally. The airport processed 413,409 aircraft operations in 2024 and serves 143 destinations (84 domestic and 59 international) across more than 30 countries on four continents. JetBlue Airways is the largest carrier at Logan with approximately 27% market share.
Boston Logan International Airport is the only Massachusetts airport offering international flights. In 2024, Logan served 9.76 million international passengers (22% of total traffic) with service to 59 international destinations across more than 30 countries. Terminal E is the primary international terminal and was expanded by 30% in 2024. New international routes launched in 2024 include Vienna (Austrian Airlines), Abu Dhabi (Etihad Airways), and Porto, Portugal (TAP Air Portugal). Major international carriers include British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Lufthansa, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Air Canada, and Aeromexico.
Worcester Regional Airport (ORH) is the best alternative for Central Massachusetts residents, offering service to Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, New York City (JFK and LaGuardia), and Philadelphia via JetBlue, American, and Delta. The airport typically has shorter security lines, easier parking, and lower costs than Logan. For those in southeastern Massachusetts, New Bedford Regional Airport (EWB) provides Cape Air service to Boston, Martha's Vineyard, and Nantucket. T.F. Green Airport (PVD) in Providence, Rhode Island, and Manchester-Boston Regional (MHT) in New Hampshire are also popular alternatives offering competitive fares and convenient access from parts of Massachusetts.
Several airports serve Cape Cod and the Islands. Hyannis (HYA) is the main Cape Cod airport with Cape Air, JetBlue, and American Airlines service to Boston, Nantucket, New York, and seasonal routes to Chicago and Philadelphia. Nantucket Memorial Airport (ACK) offers year-round Cape Air service and seasonal flights from American, Delta, JetBlue, and United to major East Coast cities from May through October. Martha's Vineyard Airport (MVY) provides similar service patterns. Provincetown Municipal Airport (PVC) offers seasonal Cape Air service to Boston (May 16 - November 4) after discontinuing year-round operations in 2024. New Bedford Regional (EWB) also connects to the islands via Cape Air.
TSA PreCheck is available at Boston Logan (all terminals A, B, C, and E with dedicated lanes at seven security checkpoints), Nantucket Memorial Airport (Gate 1), Martha's Vineyard Airport (Gate 1), Cape Cod Gateway/Hyannis (main gate), and Provincetown Municipal (main gate). Worcester Regional and Hanscom Field do not currently offer TSA PreCheck. Boston Logan has TSA PreCheck enrollment centers located in Terminal A and Terminal C (security level, secure side) open weekdays from 9 AM to 5 PM. PreCheck passengers at Logan typically experience wait times of 5-10 minutes, with 95% waiting less than 5 minutes.
Boston Logan offers extensive ground transportation options including MBTA Blue Line subway access (via free shuttle to Airport Station), Silver Line SL1 bus (direct to Downtown, South Station, and Seaport), water ferry service to Long Wharf, Hull, and Hingham, free on-airport shuttles between terminals (every 5-6 minutes), Logan Express bus service from Braintree, Danvers, Framingham, and Woburn ($9 each way, $7/day parking), taxis available at all terminals, Uber/Lyft rideshare pickup areas ($5.50 fee each way), rental cars from the centralized Rental Car Center, and numerous private shuttle and limousine services. The airport installed electric vehicle charging stations in 2024 to support sustainable transportation options.
Boston Logan's on-site parking rates (as of 2025) are $46/day maximum at the Central Garage (increased from $41), $37/day at the Economy Garage (increased from $32), and $38/day at Terminal B and E garages. Short-term parking costs $8/hour at all locations. Off-airport parking options offer significant savings, with Parkos lots ranging from $10-$15.50/day, PreFlight Airport Parking starting at $26/day (111 Eastern Ave, Chelsea with shuttle every 10 minutes), and Fasttrack Boston Airport Parking from $22/day (30 Railroad St, Revere with on-demand shuttle). These off-site options can save up to 50% compared to on-airport rates.
The three largest general aviation airports in Massachusetts are Laurence G. Hanscom Field (BED) in Bedford with 119,100 operations in 2024 and 252 based aircraft, serving as New England's premier corporate aviation airport and Logan reliever; Norwood Memorial Airport (OWD) with 58,628 annual operations and 101 based aircraft located just 12 air miles from downtown Boston; and Beverly Regional Airport (BVY), home to multiple flight schools including Beverly Flight Center and Avier Flight. Other significant GA airports include Plymouth Municipal (PYM) with ~50,000 operations annually, Fitchburg Municipal (FIT) serving central Massachusetts business aviation, and Westfield-Barnes Regional (BAF), which installed electric aircraft charging stations in 2024.
Boston Logan International Airport added several significant new routes and carriers in 2024. Austrian Airlines launched new service to Vienna, while Etihad Airways began flying to Abu Dhabi, making Boston one of only four U.S. cities with nonstop Etihad service. TAP Air Portugal introduced seasonal service to Porto and Funchal. Airlines that paused operations during the pandemic, including Aeromexico and Hainan Airlines, resumed service to Logan in 2024. At Worcester Regional Airport, JetBlue brought back seasonal Fort Myers service starting October 2024 after successful winter operations. However, Provincetown Municipal Airport reduced service to seasonal-only (May-November) after Cape Air discontinued year-round Boston flights due to winter unprofitability.
