🏌️ Women's Golf Equipment & Fitting

Equipment Specifications Differences

Shaft Weight:

  • Women's Standard: 45-55 grams
  • Women's Driver Shafts: As light as 40 grams
  • Men's Driver Shafts: 50-65 grams (comparison)

Shaft Flex & Swing Speed:

  • Standard Lady Flex: Designed for under 70 mph swings
  • Average Woman: Under 75 mph with driver
  • Reality: Many women golfers need firmer (stiffer) shafts than standard ladies' clubs
  • Typical Need: High-end lady flex or men's senior flex for average female golfer

Club Length:

  • Standard women's clubs are 1 inch shorter than men's
  • Adjusted for average height differences
  • Custom fitting accounts for individual height and posture

Overall Weight:

  • Lighter shafts
  • Lighter grips
  • Lighter clubhead materials
  • Easier to generate clubhead speed

Why Custom Fitting Matters

The Fitting Challenge:

Standard "ladies" equipment was designed decades ago and doesn't match modern female golfers who are stronger and more athletic.

What Professional Fitting Determines:

  1. Shaft Flex: Based on YOUR swing speed, not gender
    • Many women need senior or regular flex
    • Faster swingers need stiffer shafts
  2. Club Length: Based on YOUR height and wrist-to-floor measurement
    • Taller women may need standard or +1" clubs
    • Proper length improves posture and consistency
  3. Loft Angles: Optimized for YOUR launch conditions
    • Driver loft: 10.5-13.5 degrees typical
    • Higher lofts help maximize carry distance
  4. Lie Angle: Ensures proper sole contact at impact
  5. Grip Size: Properly sized for YOUR hands

Where to Get Fitted:

  • LPGA-certified teaching professionals
  • Club Champion and specialty fitting centers
  • PGA professionals with fitting expertise
  • Golf retail stores with launch monitor technology
  • Golf club manufacturers (Titleist, Callaway, TaylorMade fitting days)

Equipment Recommendations by Skill Level

Beginner (30+ handicap):

  • Driver: 12-13.5 degrees loft, lightweight shaft
  • Fairway Woods: High-lofted 5-wood and 7-wood instead of long irons
  • Hybrids: 4H and 5H replace 4-iron and 5-iron
  • Irons: Game-improvement with wide soles (6-PW)
  • Wedges: Gap wedge and sand wedge
  • Putter: Heel-toe weighted mallet for forgiveness

Intermediate (15-30 handicap):

  • Driver: 10.5-12 degrees, fitted shaft flex
  • Fairway Woods: 3-wood and 5-wood
  • Hybrids: 1-2 hybrids replacing long irons
  • Irons: Cavity-back irons (5-PW)
  • Wedges: Pitching, gap, sand, potentially lob wedge
  • Putter: Based on stroke type preference

Advanced (under 15 handicap):

  • Driver: 9-10.5 degrees, custom shaft fitting critical
  • Fairway Woods: 3-wood and optional 5-wood
  • Hybrids/Long Irons: Based on preference and gapping
  • Irons: Players irons or forged cavity-back (4-PW)
  • Wedges: 3-4 wedges with specific loft gapping
  • Putter: Precision-fitted to stroke

Should Women Use "Men's" Clubs?

Absolutely, if they fit better! Modern female golfers should prioritize proper specifications over gender labels. Many competitive female golfers, including some LPGA professionals, use equipment from "men's" lines with appropriate shaft and length specifications. The key is custom fitting to YOUR swing, not choosing based on marketing labels. Focus on shaft flex, weight, length, and loft - not whether clubs are labeled "men's" or "women's."

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

7.9 million women and girls play on-course golf in the United States as of 2024 - an all-time high. This represents 28% of all golfers, the highest proportion ever recorded.

Additionally, 8.2 million women play off-course golf at venues like Topgolf and simulators. The female golf population has grown by 23% since 2018, with women accounting for approximately 60% of the net growth in golfers since the pandemic began in 2019.

Junior girls represent 1.28 million of the total, comprising 35% of all junior golfers - more than double the 15% rate from 2000.

Custom fitting is strongly recommended. Research shows that less than 10% of female golfers who get custom fitted can actually use standard "ladies" golf clubs.

Standard women's clubs were designed decades ago and often don't match modern female golfers who are stronger and more athletic. Most women need equipment with firmer (stiffer) shaft flex than standard ladies' clubs provide - typically high-end lady flex or men's senior flex.

What Custom Fitting Determines:

  • Shaft Flex: Based on your actual swing speed, not gender labels
  • Club Length: Fitted to your height and wrist-to-floor measurement
  • Loft Angles: Optimized for your launch conditions
  • Lie Angle: Ensures proper sole contact at impact
  • Grip Size: Properly sized for your hands

Don't be concerned if your fitting results in equipment from "men's" product lines - focus on specifications that match YOUR swing, not marketing labels.

College Recruiting Starts Early: Top NCAA Division I programs begin making verbal scholarship offers during summer after sophomore year of high school. Build your resume with tournament results, rankings, and competitive scores.

NEW NCAA Division I Rules (2025-26 Season):

  • 9 scholarships maximum per team (increased from 6)

  • More scholarship money but fewer roster positions

Previous System (Through 2024-25):

  • 6 scholarships maximum per team
  • Average $18,827 per player per year

How Scholarships Work:

Golf is an equivalency sport, meaning coaches can divide scholarships into partial or full awards. Not all programs are fully funded - some have fewer scholarships than the maximum allowed.

Division II:

  • 5.4 scholarships maximum
  • Can be divided among players
  • Balance of academics and athletics

Division III:

  • No athletic scholarships allowed
  • Academic and need-based financial aid available
  • Strong academics-first philosophy

Bottom Line: Competition for scholarships is intense. Only 2.8% of high school athletes compete at NCAA Division I level. Build strong tournament results, national rankings, and maintain excellent academics to maximize scholarship opportunities.
