History: Abraham Harry Blank donated $150,000 in 1963 for construction of children's zoo on decommissioned Fort Des Moines property. Des Moines Children's Zoo officially opened May 8, 1966. Closed late 1982 for major renovations. Reopened May 17, 1986 featuring geographic themed exhibits with spacious, naturally landscaped environments.
Collection: Home to more than 800 furry, finned, and feathered exotic creatures. Over 2,100 animals representing almost 200 different species.
